For a 20-person engineering practice, the primary barrier to digital efficiency isn't a lack of expensive software - it’s the absence of a governed environment. By implementing ISO 19650-aligned structures directly within your existing network drives or Microsoft 365 tenant, you can transform your server and folders, or SharePoint into an enterprise-grade, audit-ready Common Data Environment (CDE) without the heavy overhead of platforms like Procore, ACC, or ProjectWise.

When you consider that mid-market firms often face annual subscription costs ranging from £35,000 to £60,000 for proprietary construction management software, optimizing your existing infrastructure becomes an urgent strategic imperative.

The Director & Engineer’s Perspective

We have shifted the focus from "buying more software" to "optimizing what you already own." This is the core philosophy behind Environment, our solution for engineering practices that need enterprise control without the enterprise price tag.

Instant Compliance: Achieve a fully governed ISO 19650-compliant project setup on day one.
Zero Workflow Disruption: Engineers continue using familiar network drive mappings. We handle the metadata, permissions, and revision control silently in the background.
100% Data Ownership: Your data lives in your tenant. There is no vendor lock-in, no hostage situations, and zero migration export fees if you decide to change paths.

Key Operational Capabilities

Moving away from disconnected file storage toward a governed environment changes how your team functions day-to-day. As noted in the 2026 Admin Misery Index, professionals are losing significant billable hours to administrative friction; our solution reverses this trend:

Drive-Mapped Storage: Engineers work directly from mapped drives. No browser uploads or mandatory forms just to save a sketch.
CAD & BIM-Aware Management: Eliminate broken XREFs and file locking conflicts. Our setup handles large files smoothly, avoiding the sync loops common with standard OneDrive configurations.
Automated Naming & Revision Rules: Stop the "FINAL_v2_edit.dwg" culture. We lock naming conventions and suitability statuses to ensure zero drawing rejections from external parties.
Cross-Project Knowledge Search: Query past calculations, technical notes, and archived email decisions in seconds.
Immutable Audit Trails: Automatically log every revision, approval, and decision to satisfy Building Safety Act requirements - specifically the "golden thread" - without manual effort.

How We Transform Your Practice

We don't just hand you a software license; we deliver a turn-key transformation of your document management infrastructure.

Turnkey M365 CDE Deployment

We configure your existing network drives or Microsoft 365 tenant into a governed CDE. By deploying automated project templates and permission models, we save you months of internal IT experimentation. This approach delivers the same outcomes as dedicated CDEs while ensuring your data remains firmly under your control.

Intelligent Migration & Integration

We don't believe in "lifting and shifting" chaos. We curate your active projects, understanding existing folder structures to tag files with relevant metadata (like "Published" or "Incoming"). You continue exactly as you were delivering, but with an audit trail now layered into it.

Pragmatic Onboarding & Health Checks

Automated workflows can reduce document preparation time by 60 to 80 percent. We provide role-specific onboarding (different for your senior engineers and junior engineers) and long-term health monitoring to your submissions and transmittals, ensuring your QA remains fast and compliant as your practice grows.

Why SharePoint Fails Without Governance

The "dumping ground" culture is the enemy of the 20-person firm. It bloats your drives with more and more storage needs, poorer understanding of where things are saved, and poorer searching. Furthermore, standardising your information management is essential to ensure that your project data acts as a genuine asset rather than a liability.

By implementing bespoke structures and naming and workflows for each project, you prevent technical debt, and ensure your Common Data Environment satisfies the rigorous traceability and accessibility requirements mandated by modern regulatory bodies.

Key Takeaways for Your Practice

Solve Architecture First: Governance must be baked into your file structures before you try to "fix" processes.
Metadata over Folders: Reduce reliance on deep, sync-breaking folder paths. Use metadata to keep your storage lean and high-performance.
Embrace Existing Infrastructure: You don't need a new, expensive CDE. You need to unlock the enterprise-grade potential already hidden within your drives and Microsoft 365 tenant.
